This room is located on the ground floor of the nursery premises in a separate annex building. Children within this room are aged 2 – 3 years.
This room is bright and spacious and is resourced with furniture adequate for this age range.
A daily routine is followed in this room, however the staff will continue to respect and follow individual routines with regards to sleeping.
Little Stars is registered for eleven children and we work on a 1:4 adult/child ratio.
Little Stars is a single open space, which has linoleum and carpet throughout.
In addition to this space there is also a separate room for toileting and hand washing. Children are taken to use these facilities when appropriate and are taken to hand wash over the course of the day. Independence is encouraged for this age range by practitioners supporting individuals in developing their confidence to manage their self-help skills.
Designated areas within this room are used at specific times of the day. For example, during meal/snack times, children are seated together to make these meal times a social occasion.
During sleep/rest times, children sleep on sleep mats with sheets and covers are provided.
Little stars have their own separate outdoor patio area, where resources and equipment are made available for the children to access during specific periods of the daily routine. They also have access to the main Nursery garden and the play yard.
Practitioners create a well balanced curriculum that focuses upon play and structured activities.
Stimulation and one to one interaction plays an important role, as the child borders on starting Pre- school. Practitioners continue to provide stimulating, fun activities and experiences that are safe and promote all areas of development for this age range, whilst encouraging the individual child to develop the confidence and independence to experiment and explore within their environment.
Children in the room are encouraged to come together and participate in an adult led activity for a short period of time appropriate to their age. As children approach 2.5 yrs, practitioners will begin to introduce expectations for ‘good sitting/listening’ to children as they begin preparing them for the Pre-school.
These ‘group times’ aim to promote social interactions between the children, their peers and their carers and also promote ‘Areas of Learning’, such as:
Communication, Language and Literacy - Listening to and repeating sounds and words in stories
Communication and Language –Listening games and naming sounds
Mathematical development – Learning about quantities/numerals/shapes
Physical development – Music and movement activities
Expressive Arts and Design – Learning about rhythm
Personal, Social and Emotional development – Turn taking games
Furniture and resources used in Little Stars is appropriate for this age range. Resources and equipment are used in this room to provide new and exciting opportunities for the children to explore independently and develop skills. This includes a larger selection of resources that encourage children to use their imagination, develop their creativity and build on their own experiences.
A wide variety of play resources and equipment is available to promote all areas of learning. These include open ended materials such as natural resources and craft media.
Communication and Early Language Development
Communication is a vital part in any young child’s environment. Practitioners create a language rich environment that encourages all children to develop and enhance their vocabulary and develop their competencies within social interaction.
At this stage of development, young children will begin to verbalise their experiences, knowledge and understanding and make connections with different aspects of their lives and have a desire to share this information with adults or their peers. The practitioners support each individual child in developing the confidence to express their thoughts and knowledge both freely during play and in small group situations, such as story and singing times, role play activities and yoga sessions.
Makaton is also used alongside the spoken word in the routine and play/music and rhyme activities to promote understanding and communication development.
Craft and tactile activities are enhanced for this age range, encouraging children to be confident to experiment when using a wide range of mark making resources, tools and media. Children are encouraged to develop their independence throughout the session by self selecting resources available to express themselves creatively. Practitioners enhance these experiences by encouraging children to talk about their ideas, reflecting on their creations.
We offer support and encouragement to all parents who wish to potty train their child.
Every child is different, so there is no set time when your child will develop this new skill.
Positive encouragement is required by all involved in the process.
This routine is used as guidance. Children are never forced to take part in activities that restrict their own interests or routine.
